As part of their IPC (International Primary Curriculum) topic ‘What Price Progress?’, Year 5 welcomed two visitors who showed the children how to spin and weave. The children were fascinated
by the way in which a fleece could be turned into a coat. All the
processes were clearly demonstrated, including how to use both a drop spindle
and a more complex spinning wheel. They were amazed by the variety of
patterns that can be achieved on a weaving loom.
We are hoping the
visitors will come again and give the children the opportunity to try
out the techniques. In preparation for this the children are making small
individual looms in Forest School.
The ‘What Price Progress’ unit
leads on to the Industrial Revolution when the children will be studying the impact of
the invention of steam, including in terms of the textile industry.
Having had a hands-on experience of spinning and weaving the children will equip them to really reflect upon the changes.
